It may not seem like it right now, but the warmer weather of spring is fast approaching. Do you have your inside and outside home maintenance checklist ready to go? If not, here are some items you need to get scheduled and ready to go.

OUTSIDE

Clean your Roof & Gutters– Leaves and debris can build up on the roof and in the gutters. This debris holds much moisture that can cause a lot of damage. You’ll need to get up on the roof to inspect it thoroughly (and the gutters), clear the debris, and check for any damaged areas. Since this is a more dangerous maintenance activity, a professional may be a wise choice.

Check your railings, stairs and fences, driveway & walkways– Winter weather wreaks havoc on these surfaces.  Between freezing conditions and salt compounds, wood gets weathered and splintered becoming weak and concrete becomes cracked and uneven. Do a complete inspection and make repairs wherever necessary.

Inspect Outdoor Lighting Fixture– The winter elements may have taken a toll on your outdoor lighting as well. Look at all inground lighting as well as any lights on your home. Replace bulbs accordingly and fixtures that may have gotten broken or tarnished beyond repair during the winter season.

Refresh exterior paint. Decks and railings get a whole new look…almost brand new, with a fresh coat of paint. Goodbye winter doldrums and hello to summer fresh!

Your AC unit needs servicing! The summer months have your air conditioning and cooling units working hard, and so are the maintenance crews that service them. Do yourself a favor and start early. Call your technician in early spring and get your inspection completed. You’ll be set for when temps start to soar and won’t be waiting to get a technician scheduled during the high period.

Fix all damaged screens– Not a lot of explanation is needed here. Screens get damaged during storms and winter weather can be the worst. Inspect all your screens and make the repairs necessary. The fresh springtime air will be a welcome addition to your home with working screens on all the windows.

Prepare your Spring Landscaping– This is clean-up time.  Remove winter debris and leaves, clean up the flower beds, lay down fresh mulch, divide any perennials, and prune your trees and shrubs.

INSIDE

Check all your interior windows. After winter weather stripping and caulking, windows can have cracked paint and even cracked glass. A little sanding and a fresh coat of paint, along with replacing any cracked glass will make your windows look great again. Remember to change out your window treatments as well. Think Spring!  Lighter colors and fabrics that allow the sunshine and fresh air in.

It’s Spring-Cleaning Time! It doesn’t have to be done all at once, but Spring is an ideal time to deep clean and organize your home. Set a schedule and go room by room- closets & cabinets too.  Boy does it feel good to have your home totally clean and organized again after all the holidays and winter grunge.

Update your ceiling fans. Ceiling fans are great for circulating air on warm days, and also help save on energy costs. If you have ceiling fans, make sure they are running properly. If they are older you may want to invest in a newer model. There are so many new features & functions available. Do you have a room with limited windows? A ceiling fan is a great alternative to give some extra air circulation to the area.

Looking to do any updates?  Spring is always an excellent time to do updates in your home, even if it’s just a fresh coat of paint. It’s also prime time for larger remodels such as kitchens and baths. So get those calendars out and start scheduling your maintenance and updates. Get ahead of the rush…you’ll be happy you did.
