Red Oak is the county seat of Montgomery County, Iowa and is home to over 5700 residents. The city gets its name from Red Oak Creek, which flows through the community.  It was first settled in 1855 and became the county seat in 1865.  The community of Red Oak was officially founded in 1869 when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived and at the time was named Red Oak Junction.  The community still celebrates their history each summer with Junction Days. 

Shopping & Dining

Red Oak offers residents with a number of great options for shopping and dining. Kmart is the primary department store in Red Oak.  They offer products from clothing, electronics & video games along with popular brands like Sofia Vergara, Chef Gordon Ramsay Jaclyn Smith, Joe Boxer and Route 66. Butik on the downtown square sells clothing for the entire family. Other great places to shop include Red Oak Floral & Gift, Video Warehouse, Berggren Jewelery, Schweser’s women’s clothing, and much more.

Residents of Red Oak certainly have plenty of great dining choices. Casa de Oro offers up classic Mexican food presented by people who take pride in their restaurant. The Read Coach Inn Restaurant & Lounge features Pepper Crusted Sirloin, Chicken Malibu, Salmon Fillet, and Bacon & Bleu Burgers.  They also offer take out for large groups of up to 100 guests. If you’re in the mood for Italian cuisine, then try Sauced Kitchen & Cocktails. Other dining options include Johnny’s Steak House, Pizza Ranch, and many others.

Parks & Recreation

Red Oak parks offer residents a variety of ways to enjoy outdoor activities. Some of the larger parks include Kelly Park, which offers a ball diamond ball diamond, water fountain, horse shoe area, soccer nets, shelter houses with picnic tables and grill, Disc Golf, and more. Chautauqua features a batting cage, covered pavilion, and sledding area in the winter. Other parks include Legion Park, Fountain Square Park, Little Wilson, College Park, Dutton Park, and Eggert Park.

The Anderson Conservation Area focuses on providing a place for environmental education as well as wildlife preservation.  It also offers scenic walking trails.  Fishing is also allowed in the 15 acres pond. And for golfers, the Red Oak Country Club boasts ab 18-hole, par 72 championship course that spans 6176 yards.

Education & Healthcare

Red Oak Community Schools serves the educational needs of the students of Red Oak.  Schools include Red Oak High School, Red Oak Middle School, Washington Intermediate, and Inman Primary School.

The Montgomery County Memorial Hospital is a modern 25-bed facility and was opened in 1920.  It was built in its current location in 1941 and in 1961 a long-term care unit was added.
