Glenwood is located in southwest Iowa in Mills County, 15 miles south of the nation's crossroads of I-80 and I-29 at Exit 35.  Glenwood is 4 miles east of I-29 on Highway 34.The city is situated just to the east of the Missouri River and the historical and cultural landmark, the Loess Hills.  Its history can be traced back to a community known as Coonsville that was established in 1848.  Well-known landmarks include the Mills County Historical Museum, Glenwood Resource Center, Glenwood Lake Park, and the historic town square.

Shopping and Dining

Glenwood offers boutique shopping, Bomgaars, Garden Treasures and Hardware Hank as well as discount shopping options. For everyday grocery purchases, city residents can head to No Frills on Sharp Street and Newman's and Hometown Shopko at the Glenwood Plaza.

The The Bucksnort Restaurant, Adriano's Brick Oven Pizza, and the Gathering Place are centrally located restaurants on the Glenwood Town Square.  Keg Creek Brewing Company on East Sharp Street and Vine Street Cellars on Vine Street offer great local beverages and fun places to gather. For Mexican cuisine, residents of Glenwood real estate can head to El Porton Mexican Grille on South Locust Street. Tom & Tiff's offers home-cooked meals. There are also several fast food restaurant options located in Glenwood where residents can get a quick and convenient bite to eat which include Subway, McDonald's and Pizza Hut, located on South Locust Street.

Parks and Recreation

Glenwood Lake Park is a large park located to the east of town. It is found on Lake Drive and it offers guests playgrounds facilities and areas for throwing horseshoes. It also offers camping. Pony Creek Park is located about 10 minutes to the northwest of Glenwood real estate. Like Glenwood Lake Park, this park also is located along the banks of a body of water. Pony Creek Lake offers visitors opportunities for fishing and boating. Another favorite fishing spot is Mile Hill Lake, located on Highway 34 between Glenwood and I-29.

The YMCA of Mills County located on Sivers Road in Glenwood is an important recreational resource in the community offering gym equipment and organized athletic events including flag football, aquatics, and soccer. There is an Anytime Fitness located on South Locust Street where Glenwood residents can work out and get in shape. Another recreational resource in the area is the Glenwood Golf Course, a nine hole public course, located northeast of Glenwood.

Living

The population of Glenwood is approximately 5300. Glenwood real estate tends to be slightly more expensive than real estate on average in the rest of the state. In 2013, a median home value in Glenwood of $136,395 compares with a median home value of $126,900 in the rest of the state. Although Glenwood real estate tends to be somewhat expensive when compared with Iowa real estate, the cost of living in Glenwood is low with a cost of living index reading of 90.0 in March of 2013.

Schools, Healthcare, and Transportation

The Glenwood Community School District runs public schools in the community. Schools and educational institutions that are run by this district include Kid's Place Childcare, Northeast Elementary, West Elementary, Glenwood Middle School, Glenwood High School, and the Glenwood Alternative High School. The school district has an enrollment of over 2,000 students, serving students in Glenwood, Mineola, Silver City, and Pacific Junction.

The Glenwood Resource Center is a healthcare resource in the area offering mental health and disability services. For family medical services, residents of Glenwood real estate utilize CHI (Alegent Creighton Health Initiatives) or Methodist Physicians Clinic, both located on South Locust Street.  There is also one local doctor, located on the Glenwood town square. Large medical centers and hospitals are located in nearby Council Bluffs, Bellevue, and Omaha, with Methodist Jennie Edmundson in Council Bluffs and Nebraska Medicine Bellevue located the closest.

Glenwood does not have its own public transportation. However, there is public transportation offered in n earby Omaha. Omaha has an Amtrak station located on South 9th Street and a Greyhound station located on Jackson Street. Eppley Airfield is located just east of downtown Omaha.
